Armenia, as a landlocked country experiences higher than usual cost of transport for the movement of the people and goods. ADB has been active in the transport sector in Armenia since 2009, supporting the Government of Armenia to implement the North-South Road Corridor Improvement Program, a 550-km road from north to south of Armenia, connecting Armenia with its neighbors and markets. So far, ADB has been involved in 3 tranches, with a combined financing volume of about $350 million, and a combined length of about 91-km.
ADB helped reconstruct an18.7-km road between Talin and Lanjik towns. As part of its North-South Road Corridor Investment Program, ADB is linking Armenia with its neighbors, following the historical transport routes.
Narek Zulalyan, Deputy Executive Director, Road Department of Armenia
Completed in 2022, the road is now considered a crucial corridor for regional and international connectivity. Beyond improved transportation, the project played a key role in strengthening the implementing agency’s expertise in procurement, contract management, social and environmental safeguards and the adaptation of modern construction methods and technologies.
Benik Vardanyan, Resident, Talin village
Before, it used to take us 4-5 hours to get to the city. Now, we reach Gyumri in 25 minutes, and Maralik in 5-6 minutes. The traffic is calm, so we can travel safely back and forth.
Kalepsi Harutyunyan, Resident, Lanjik village
We’re happy that this road passes through our village. It has made travelling to Gyumri and Yerevan much easier. Now we can go and return in a shorter time, and the lives of the villagers, our lives, have improved significantly.
As Armenia improved its transport network, ADB will continue to help the country develop a climate-resilient, inclusive, and accessible transport system.
